If you want a masterclass in dealing, watch the Patriots, who turned every swap into a profit this weekend. No fireworks, but a solid B.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher. They banked enough surplus on Bertrand to cover a lot of smaller sins. Every board in the league had Allen lower, and that gap is the story.
The Patriots clearly valued win-now help, adding bodies who have done it before.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 24 they get protection for the quarterback. A real need, handled.
They did well to land Kingsley Suamataia in the 56th pick, just ahead of his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Cooper Beebe in the Round 3 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster fit checks out.
No edge and no loss on Khyree Jackson in the 104th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Theo Johnson. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Braelon Allen in pick 150 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
By-the-book stuff, Javon Baker at pick No. 182 squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
The board fumbled JD Bertrand all the way to the 229th pick, and they scooped it up. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
