Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Commanders spent No. 67 on Jaheim Bell, a name the board had a full 68 spots lower. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
Drake Maye gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. They banked enough surplus on Wilson to cover a lot of smaller sins.
They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
A market-rate quarterback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Drake Maye. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Taliese Fuaga in the 36th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They took Tyler Guyton at par in pick No. 40, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A real head-scratcher, Jaheim Bell in No. 67 is miles ahead of his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They jumped the gun on Max Melton, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Roman Wilson in the Round 4 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A straight-up fair deal on Javion Cohen at the 141st overall pick, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They paid sticker price for Michael Barrett in the 181st pick, and that is fine. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A reach on Maurice Smith in pick No. 223; the board had better options right there. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
