New England Patriots

Best value of the weekend goes to the Patriots for Dixon: B.

by CARDOPENA · 2024 NFL Draft · 12 picks · 1 steals · 5 reaches
Value C+

Future A+

Call it larceny. Johnny Dixon sat on the board until the 214th pick, and the Patriots did not need to be asked twice.

Leaving interior defensive lineman unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. They will need Milton III to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.

Stockpiling next year's capital is patient, if unglamorous, asset work. Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.

A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.18 · Pick 18 · Brian Thomas Jr. · WR · rank 27
In pick 18 they get a difference-maker at receiver, even if it was a touch early. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.2 · Pick 34 · Bo Nix · QB · rank 30
A clean, defensible pick in No. 34 with a little surplus value in Bo Nix. A need, and now a little less of one.
R2.15 · Pick 47 · Kingsley Suamataia · OT · rank 61
A premium they did not need to pay, Kingsley Suamataia a notch or two before his time. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R2.25 · Pick 57 · Patrick Paul · OT · rank 69
Patrick Paul at slot 57 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Ja'Lynn Polk · WR · rank 73
They paid sticker price for Ja'Lynn Polk in the 68th overall pick, and that is fine. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R3.29 · Pick 92 · Caelen Carson · CB · rank 94
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Caelen Carson. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R4.3 · Pick 103 · Braelon Allen · RB · rank 107
Braelon Allen at Round 4, Pick 3 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R5.1 · Pick 137 · Jalyx Hunt · DE-EDGE · rank 151
They went early on Jalyx Hunt in the Round 5 slot, and the value did not follow. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R6.5 · Pick 180 · Joe Milton III · QB · rank 200
Joe Milton III at the Round 6 slot is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It fills a real need, too.
R6.18 · Pick 193 · Jase McClellan · RB · rank 196
Jase McClellan in the 193rd pick is fair value, right on his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R6.39 · Pick 214 · Johnny Dixon · CB · rank 190
Johnny Dixon at the 214th overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
R7.11 · Pick 231 · Nathan Thomas · OT · rank 229
No edge and no loss on Nathan Thomas in No. 231; it is a wash and a sensible one. The roster fit checks out.
