You can hear the double-takes from here. The Cowboys took Joshua Cephus at pick No. 244, roughly 21 spots before his name belonged. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
They will regret leaving quarterback for another day if the season turns on it. The McGlothern value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a plug-and-play piece up front. Exactly the need they had to hit.
By-the-book stuff, Payton Wilson at No. 56 squarely in line with his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid sticker price for Trey Benson in Round 3, Pick 24, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Dwight McGlothern is a better player than pick 174 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Frank Gore Jr. at pick No. 216 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Fair-plus on Nathan Thomas, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
