New England Patriots

A franchise passer in Daniels headlines a B weekend for the Patriots.

The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Jayden Daniels, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.

They are betting Culp proves the room right and everyone else wrong. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck.

It is not that Solomon is a bad player; it is that the Patriots had louder needs to answer first. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.

That DeJean pick is the receipt they will wave around later.

Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.8 · Pick 8 · Rome Odunze · WR · rank 10
By-the-book stuff, Rome Odunze at pick No. 8 squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R1.10 · Pick 10 · Jayden Daniels · QB · rank 6
In slot 10 they get a franchise quarterback. A real need, handled.
R2.3 · Pick 35 · Cooper DeJean · CB · rank 21
Value with a capital V on Cooper DeJean in the 35th overall pick, a genuine coup. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R2.15 · Pick 47 · Roman Wilson · WR · rank 42
Roman Wilson at pick 47 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R2.19 · Pick 51 · Kris Jenkins · DL-EDGE · rank 49
Kris Jenkins in the 51st pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R3.4 · Pick 68 · Jaden Hicks · S · rank 62
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jaden Hicks in the Round 3 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.20 · Pick 84 · Blake Corum · RB · rank 78
They did well to land Blake Corum in Round 3, Pick 20, just ahead of his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R4.3 · Pick 103 · Zak Zinter · OG · rank 109
No edge and no loss on Zak Zinter in No. 103; it is a wash and a sensible one. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R4.10 · Pick 110 · Spencer Rattler · QB · rank 112
A straight-up fair deal on Spencer Rattler at No. 110, value and slot in agreement. A need, and now a little less of one.
R4.11 · Pick 111 · Javon Solomon · OLB-EDGE · rank 111
They bypassed pressing needs at interior defensive lineman to take Javon Solomon, an OLB-EDGE that was not the priority.
R5.1 · Pick 137 · Luke McCaffrey · WR · rank 150
They paid a round early for Luke McCaffrey in Round 5, Pick 1, more than the board wanted. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R6.5 · Pick 180 · James Williams · LB · rank 173
A clean, defensible pick in the 180th overall pick with a little surplus value in James Williams. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R7.11 · Pick 231 · Devin Culp · TE · rank 277
Devin Culp in pick 231 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. The roster fit checks out.
