Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Colts were there to profit. Kobe King, the No. 126 name on the board, should have been long gone before the 228th pick. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
Reaching for McLaughlin left real value on the table behind him. With wide receiver, quarterback and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them.
The wide receiver spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Running back is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 12th overall pick they get a centerfielder for the defense. More want than need.
Harold Fannin Jr. is a better player than slot 46 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A want over a need in pick 77: Andrew Mukuba adds a safety while wide receiver, quarterback and other spots keeps waiting.
They robbed the room for Deontae Lawson here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Value said wait; Seth McLaughlin in Round 5, Pick 13 says they were not listening. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Nicholas Singleton in the Round 6 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Kobe King in pick No. 228 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
