The best pick of the weekend was also the simplest. The Packers watched Braelon Allen slide 25 picks past his grade and did not hesitate. No fireworks, but a solid B.
The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They will answer for taking linebacker early while quarterback, tight end and other spots went begging. They will need Puni to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but quarterback.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 25 they get a potential shutdown corner. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A slide stopped in the Round 2 slot, with Xavier Legette worth more than the price. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Edgerrin Cooper at the 54th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Steal is underselling it; Bralen Trice at pick No. 57 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Fair-plus on Mike Sainristil, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They paid up for Dominick Puni at pick 91 when waiting would have done the job. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Cole Bishop at No. 125 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose linebacker. Cedric Gray in Round 4, Pick 35 leaves quarterback, tight end and other spots for later.
Braelon Allen at Round 6, Pick 5 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
No edge and no loss on Tanor Bortolini in slot 217; it is a wash and a sensible one. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A running back of that caliber at No. 231 is the definition of value, full stop. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Zakhari Franklin at the Round 7 slot is money in the bank, a wide receiver taken below his worth. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
