Every swap seemed to tilt away from the Chargers, and the value they bled adds up to real damage.
J.J. McCarthy gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped edge rusher, which is a strange place to end up. The cost of the Jones reach is exactly the players who went right after him.
They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring. They banked enough surplus on Hadden to cover a lot of smaller sins.
About as rough as a weekend gets on paper, with edge rusher still staring back at them.
Pick-by-Pick
Joe Alt at the 5th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
In the Round 1 slot they get the face of the franchise. A clean fit for the roster.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Brian Thomas Jr. at No. 35. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Fair-plus on Adonai Mitchell, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They paid a round early for Mike Sainristil in the 66th overall pick, more than the board wanted. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A conviction pick on Blake Corum at slot 69 that the board grades a round light. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Kamren Kinchens in pick No. 71 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Zak Zinter in pick 90 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. The roster fit checks out.
Brenden Rice at No. 105 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Christian Jones at pick No. 110 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A reach on Dallin Holker in Round 5, Pick 4; the board had better options right there. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Kamal Hadden in the 181st pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Good price on Josh Wallace in the Round 7 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
