B

Kansas City Chiefs

The Chiefs let Fautanu fall into their laps, and walked away with a B.

There is a lot to like until you notice tight end is still a hole. The Chiefs never got to the one that mattered most. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.

Fautanu at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. If Jefferson pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.

The trade work was a quiet net positive.

All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but tight end.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.9 · Pick 41 · Troy Fautanu · OT · rank 23
Troy Fautanu in slot 41 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R2.10 · Pick 42 · Adonai Mitchell · WR · rank 32
The board had Adonai Mitchell higher than No. 42, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R3.37 · Pick 100 · Christian Mahogany · OG · rank 100
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Christian Mahogany. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R4.2 · Pick 102 · Cam Hart · CB · rank 101
No edge and no loss on Cam Hart in pick 102; it is a wash and a sensible one. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R4.11 · Pick 111 · Cedric Gray · LB · rank 116
No drama and no debate, Cedric Gray went about where he belonged in Round 4, Pick 11. It fills a real need, too.
R5.23 · Pick 159 · Tykee Smith · S · rank 160
By-the-book stuff, Tykee Smith at the 159th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R5.37 · Pick 173 · Jordan Jefferson · DT · rank 184
A conviction pick on Jordan Jefferson at the 173rd pick that the board grades a round light. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R6.10 · Pick 185 · Kamal Hadden · CB · rank 169
They read the board right and Kamal Hadden was the payoff at pick 185. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
