The Patriots looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Ozzy Trapilo at pick 40 regardless, 97 picks early. For now it grades a C+, with the swing picks left to settle the rest.
The Warren pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch. The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 3 they get a lockdown presence outside. More want than need.
Ozzy Trapilo in the 40th pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
They will replay Tyler Warren at Round 3, Pick 7 for years; that is how good the value is. It fills a real need, too.
They talked themselves into Sonny Styles at the 78th overall pick, and the board did not agree. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Smael Mondon Jr. at slot 107 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A minor need, but a need all the same.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Xavier Nwankpa. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They robbed the room for Bryce Foster here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A real head-scratcher, Garrett Dellinger in the Round 7 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A big swing on Jimmy Horn Jr. at the 236th pick, well ahead of any board in the building. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
