The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Chiefs reached some 27 spots for Myles Cole, and value like that does not grow back.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. The Liufau value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
Adonai Mitchell at pick No. 32 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They paid sticker price for Patrick Paul in the 64th overall pick, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A reach for Maason Smith in slot 95; a little patience would have been rewarded. A need, and now a little less of one.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jaylin Simpson. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Myles Cole in the 170th pick, miles early. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Marist Liufau slipping to the Round 5 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Jared Wiley in slot 190 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
No drama and no debate, Kimani Vidal went about where he belonged in the 252nd pick. The roster fit checks out.
