For all the names on the card, the loudest question went unanswered. The Bears walked out of the weekend still thin at edge rusher, a hole that has a way of deciding seasons.
Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Hunter. Reaching for Masses left real value on the table behind him.
They left with interior defensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off. Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 25 they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value. A real need, handled.
A.J. Haulcy at No. 57 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Lee Hunter slid further than he should have, and pick 60 is lovely value for the interior defensive lineman. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
No edge and no loss on Sam Hecht in slot 89; it is a wash and a sensible one. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Hezekiah Masses at pick No. 129 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Eli Heidenreich at the 239th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They paid sticker price for Fa'alili Fa'amoe in the 241st overall pick, and that is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
