Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Cowboys were there to profit. Kris Jenkins, the No. 49 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick 87.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through cornerback. Watson has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
Almost all the early capital went to that side of the ball.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 24 they get a difference-maker at receiver. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Jackson Powers-Johnson at the Round 2 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Kris Jenkins in the 87th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Javon Foster in pick 124 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They paid up for Jaylan Ford at Round 5, Pick 38 when waiting would have done the job. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Kimani Vidal at the 212th pick is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Nathaniel Watson at No. 245 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
