The Cowboys did not so much draft Stone Handy as overpay for him, 112 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
Getting Bassa where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Nothing here to lose sleep over, and plenty to feel decent about.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 12th pick they get a centerpiece for the ground game, and a steal at that. A clean fit for the roster.
They will replay Kenneth Grant at the 44th overall pick for years; that is how good the value is. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Taking Jalon Walker in pick 76 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Tai Felton in the Round 5 slot, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They robbed the room for Kevin Winston Jr. here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Cam Skattebo in slot 170 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The roster fit checks out.
Jake Majors at the 173rd overall pick is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Stone Handy at the 186th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
You do not let a linebacker like Jeffrey Bassa reach Round 6, Pick 34 and blink. They did not. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They went early on Aydan White in pick No. 248, and the value did not follow. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
