Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Patriots spent slot 69 on Ashton Gillotte, a name most had 28 spots down the list.
That King pick is the receipt they will wave around later. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for Will Johnson in pick 4, and that is fine. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Armand Membou at the 38th overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Ashton Gillotte at the 69th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Dylan Sampson is a better player than Round 3, Pick 13 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Tory Horton at the Round 4 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They read the board right and Kobe King was the payoff at slot 145. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
