Call it larceny. Deion Burks sat on the board until pick 121, and the Steelers did not need to be asked twice.
The Muhammad pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They will answer for taking offensive lineman early while interior defensive lineman and edge rusher went begging. They will regret leaving interior defensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with quarterback chief among the fixes.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but interior defensive lineman.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a difference-maker at receiver at a price that makes it sweeter.
The board had Emmanuel Pregnon higher than slot 53, and the offensive lineman fell to them anyway. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A reach for Jacob Rodriguez in pick No. 65; a little patience would have been rewarded. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Malik Muhammad this early at the 76th overall pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Zakee Wheatley in No. 85 is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A curious use of the 99th pick. Interior defensive lineman and edge rusher needed the pick; an offensive lineman in Markel Bell did not.
Deion Burks at Round 4, Pick 21 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Drew Allar in pick 161 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The board fumbled Tanner Koziol all the way to slot 183, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Thaddeus Dixon at the 216th overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A clean, defensible pick in the Round 7 slot with a little surplus value in Noah Whittington. A need, and now a little less of one.
Logan Taylor in pick 237 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
