The Chargers looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Jarquez Hunter at No. 238 regardless, 59 picks early. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
They will answer for taking DT-EDGE early while edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots went begging. They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
That Hopper pick is the receipt they will wave around later. On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 17 they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Denzel Burke at No. 49 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose DT-EDGE. Maason Smith in pick 81 leaves edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots for later.
They went early on Zach Frazier in the 117th overall pick, and the value did not follow. It fills a real need, too.
A quiet steal in the 154th pick: Ty'Ron Hopper for less than the market said. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Andrew Coker. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Jarquez Hunter in pick 238 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
