The board owed the Cowboys one, and it paid up: Dylan Fairchild, the No. 56 name on the board, sitting there at pick No. 209 like a gift left on the doorstep.
They will regret leaving cornerback for another day if the season turns on it. The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 4 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Good work on the whole, with cornerback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a double-digit-sack hope. More want than need.
In pick No. 32 they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Circle this one: Malaki Starks at the 75th pick is a fall that decides a draft. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Kaleb Johnson in No. 149 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A safety of that caliber at slot 169 is the definition of value, full stop. They doubled down on a strength rather than a need.
The board fumbled Tez Johnson all the way to the 170th overall pick, and they scooped it up. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
You do not let an interior defensive lineman like Rylie Mills reach Round 6, Pick 11 and blink. They did not. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Dylan Fairchild at pick 209 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
