Cleveland Browns

A solid, sensible weekend for the Browns: B-.

The Browns did not so much draft Dayon Hayes as overpay for him, 102 picks clear of his grade. It sets an uneasy tone for the weekend. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.

Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Rourke. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up.

Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.

In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.2 · Pick 2 · Abdul Carter · DE-EDGE · rank 3
In slot 2 they get a problem off the edge. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.1 · Pick 33 · Jaxson Dart · QB · rank 39
They took Jaxson Dart at par in the Round 2 slot, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Jared Ivey · DE-EDGE · rank 77
They went early on Jared Ivey in the 67th pick, and the value did not follow. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R3.30 · Pick 94 · Charles Grant · OT · rank 94
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Charles Grant. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R4.2 · Pick 103 · Kaimon Rucker · DE-EDGE · rank 145
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Kaimon Rucker well ahead of where he belonged. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.26 · Pick 165 · Damien Martinez · RB · rank 148
Damien Martinez in pick 165 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R6.3 · Pick 181 · Jason Marshall Jr. · CB · rank 183
By-the-book stuff, Jason Marshall Jr. at pick No. 181 squarely in line with his ranking. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R6.16 · Pick 194 · Dayon Hayes · DE-EDGE · rank 296
A real head-scratcher, Dayon Hayes in the 194th pick is miles ahead of his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R6.24 · Pick 202 · Jay Higgins · LB · rank 182
The board fumbled Jay Higgins all the way to the 202nd overall pick, and they scooped it up. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R6.38 · Pick 216 · Kurtis Rourke · QB · rank 135
Kurtis Rourke at slot 216 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R6.39 · Pick 217 · Howard Cross III · DL · rank 214
A tidy little value on Howard Cross III in Round 6, Pick 39, a step better than break-even. A need, and now a little less of one.
R7.39 · Pick 257 · Collin Oliver · LB-EDGE · rank 322
They talked themselves into Collin Oliver at No. 257, and the board did not agree. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
