The Patriots spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Andrew Mukuba, the No. 87 name on the board, in Round 5, Pick 6. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
They are betting Garcia proves the room right and everyone else wrong. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the interior defensive lineman spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 4 they get juice off the edge. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A tidy bit of business in the 38th overall pick, where Armand Membou graded well above the range. A need, and now a little less of one.
Nice patience on Elic Ayomanor, who had no business lasting to No. 69. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Darien Porter in the 77th pick is fair value, right on his grade. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Good price on Cam Skattebo in pick No. 105, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The roster fit checks out.
Taking Andrew Mukuba in slot 145 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Alex Mastromanno is a better player than the Round 7 slot suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Jamon Dumas-Johnson at pick 222 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
They talked themselves into Gino Garcia at No. 240, and the board did not agree. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
