The Cowboys spent the weekend waiting on one name, and it fell: Danny Stutsman, the No. 87 name on the board, in pick No. 171.
The cost of the Slackman reach is exactly the players who went right after him. The cornerback hole is the one line item this class does not answer. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the cornerback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Ashton Jeanty in pick No. 13. The roster fit checks out.
Malaki Starks in the Round 2 slot should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
You do not let a linebacker like Jalon Walker reach the 78th pick and blink. They did not. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Somehow Tory Horton was still sitting there in slot 148, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A tidy little value on Shemar Turner in pick 168, a step better than break-even. A need, and now a little less of one.
A real head-scratcher, Ricky White III in Round 5, Pick 33 is miles ahead of his ranking. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Circle this one: Danny Stutsman at the 171st overall pick is a fall that decides a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Taking Chris Paul Jr. in No. 189 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A big swing on Joey Slackman at the 209th overall pick, well ahead of any board in the building. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jay Toia at the Round 7 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
