You can draft well and still miss the point. The Texans did plenty of tidy work and somehow never got around to running back, which was the need that mattered most. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
Speights at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. They are betting Nelson proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
Wide receiver was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but running back.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 24 they get a bendy edge with upside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A clean, defensible pick in the 53rd overall pick with a little surplus value in Cooper Beebe. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
No drama and no debate, Tyler Davis went about where he belonged in slot 95. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
By-the-book stuff, Roman Wilson at the Round 4 slot squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Jason Marshall Jr. in No. 124 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
No edge and no loss on Malachi Moore in pick 158; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Circle this one: Omar Speights at pick No. 240 is a fall that decides a draft. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Zion Nelson at Round 7, Pick 22 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A need, and now a little less of one.
