When the story of this class is written, it opens with Solomon Byrd at slot 189, a reach of 84 spots that the board flatly disagrees with.
The Washington steal is the beam this whole class leans on. The cornerback hole is the one line item this class does not answer.
The hoard sets up next April more than it helps this September. The roster is better shaped than it was, with edge rusher chief among the fixes.
Good work on the whole, with cornerback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 22 they get a bendy edge with upside, outstanding value to boot. The biggest hole, addressed.
Edgerrin Cooper at No. 50 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Calen Bullock in the 97th overall pick, plain and simple. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
The board fumbled Malik Washington all the way to pick 160, and they scooped it up. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A clean, defensible pick in Round 5, Pick 34 with a little surplus value in Luke McCaffrey. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Jase McClellan at the Round 5 slot is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
They talked themselves into Solomon Byrd at the 189th pick, and the board did not agree. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
You do not let a safety like Josh Proctor reach the 240th overall pick and blink. They did not. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
