Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Cowboys were there to profit. Luke McCaffrey, the No. 149 name on the board, should have been long gone before pick No. 178. It nets out to a B, which feels about right.
A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want. They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
The offense got the lion's share of the attention. The phones were busy but the ledger stayed level.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
Value with a capital V on Taliese Fuaga in the 24th pick, a genuine coup. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Payton Wilson. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They did well to land Bucky Irving in No. 98, just ahead of his grade. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Dwight McGlothern is a better player than the 174th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Somehow Luke McCaffrey was still sitting there in Round 6, Pick 3, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
By-the-book stuff, JD Bertrand at slot 216 squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Nathan Thomas in the Round 7 slot is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Josh Proctor at pick No. 244 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
