Washington Commanders

The Commanders left with their quarterback, and a B to match.

The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Commanders spent their marquee pick on Jayden Daniels, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback. More right than wrong, and a B to match.

On value alone, Smith makes the weekend a net positive. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.

Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.5 · Pick 5 · Jayden Daniels · QB · rank 8
In the Round 1 slot they get the arm they will build around. A real need, handled.
R2.4 · Pick 36 · Darius Robinson · DL-EDGE · rank 39
They paid sticker price for Darius Robinson in Round 2, Pick 4, and that is fine. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R2.5 · Pick 37 · Jordan Morgan · OT · rank 37
No edge and no loss on Jordan Morgan in slot 37; it is a wash and a sensible one. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · Edgerrin Cooper · LB · rank 43
Edgerrin Cooper in the 40th pick is fair value, right on his grade. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R3.3 · Pick 67 · Mike Sainristil · CB · rank 65
They took Mike Sainristil at par in pick 67, which is nothing to complain about. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.5 · Pick 69 · Xavier Worthy · WR · rank 55
Nice patience on Xavier Worthy, who had no business lasting to pick No. 69. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.1 · Pick 101 · Christian Mahogany · OG · rank 97
Good price on Christian Mahogany in the 101st overall pick, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R4.3 · Pick 103 · Audric Estime · RB · rank 100
Fair-plus on Audric Estime, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R5.2 · Pick 138 · Sataoa Laumea · OT · rank 114
Circle this one: Sataoa Laumea at pick 138 is a fall that decides a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R6.6 · Pick 181 · Tykee Smith · S · rank 146
A safety of that caliber at slot 181 is the definition of value, full stop. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
R6.45 · Pick 220 · Tip Reiman · TE · rank 224
A market-rate tight end, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tip Reiman. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
