Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings let Smith-Wade fall into their laps, and walked away with a B.

When a board-topper like Chau Smith-Wade slides to Round 6, Pick 4, you do not overthink it, and the Vikings did not. Good, not great, and the B says as much.

If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through safety. They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made.

Quarterback is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it. The trenches got the money picks, top to bottom.

Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.26 · Pick 26 · Bralen Trice · DE-EDGE · rank 22
Nothing to complain about; Bralen Trice went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R2.3 · Pick 35 · Chris Braswell · LB-EDGE · rank 34
A straight-up fair deal on Chris Braswell at pick 35, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R2.10 · Pick 42 · Byron Murphy II · DL · rank 43
By-the-book stuff, Byron Murphy II at Round 2, Pick 10 squarely in line with his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R3.7 · Pick 71 · Trey Benson · RB · rank 72
They took Trey Benson at par in the 71st pick, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R4.8 · Pick 108 · Jacob Cowing · WR · rank 100
Jacob Cowing at pick No. 108 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R4.30 · Pick 130 · Jarrian Jones · CB · rank 121
Jarrian Jones in slot 130 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R5.12 · Pick 148 · Javion Cohen · OG · rank 145
A clean, defensible pick in the 148th overall pick with a little surplus value in Javion Cohen. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.24 · Pick 160 · Joe Milton III · QB · rank 162
Joe Milton III at No. 160 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R5.29 · Pick 165 · Ty'Ron Hopper · LB · rank 149
A slide stopped in the 165th overall pick, with Ty'Ron Hopper worth more than the price. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R6.4 · Pick 179 · Chau Smith-Wade · CB · rank 158
Chau Smith-Wade in No. 179 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
R7.10 · Pick 230 · Joshua Cephus · WR · rank 230
They paid sticker price for Joshua Cephus in the 230th pick, and that is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
