The Commanders lost the trade war and it was not close, handing partners the better end again and again. The board pushed back all weekend, and the D is the result.
They have staked the next five years on Caleb Williams, which is the only story that really matters here. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through tight end. The Williams pick alone nudges the whole weekend up a notch.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
A straight-up fair deal on Caleb Williams at the 2nd pick, value and slot in agreement. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They paid sticker price for Troy Fautanu in No. 36, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They took Adonai Mitchell at par in the 40th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They did well to land Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in the Round 3 slot, just ahead of his grade. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A clean, defensible pick in pick No. 77 with a little surplus value in Byron Murphy II. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A tidy little value on Tykee Smith in Round 3, Pick 37, a step better than break-even. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Dominick Puni. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
A tidy bit of business in slot 141, where Nehemiah Pritchett graded well above the range. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Steal is underselling it; Miyan Williams at the Round 7 slot is a heist with the alarm still ringing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
