You can lose a draft before you make a pick. The Chargers did it at the trade table, overpaying to chase players the board did not price nearly as high. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D.
Caleb Williams gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want. Lovett falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 1 they get the arm they will build around at fair value. A real need, handled.
In the 5th pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front. A clean fit for the roster.
In Round 1, Pick 14 they get a go-to option on the outside at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A slide stopped in the 37th overall pick, with Bralen Trice worth more than the price. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A straight-up fair deal on Ennis Rakestraw Jr. at No. 45, value and slot in agreement. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Edgerrin Cooper in pick 69 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A quiet steal in the Round 3 slot: Kingsley Suamataia for less than the market said. It fills a real need, too.
By-the-book stuff, MarShawn Lloyd at pick No. 105 squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
They took Max Melton at par in pick No. 110, which is nothing to complain about. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
No drama and no debate, Mohamed Kamara went about where he belonged in the 125th overall pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
No edge and no loss on Javion Cohen in pick 142; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
AJ Barner in Round 6, Pick 8 is fair value, right on his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
The board fumbled Dominic Lovett all the way to the Round 7 slot, and they scooped it up. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
