After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Commanders committed. Caleb Williams is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. Fine in stretches, shaky in others: a C+.
Wiley at that cost is the sort of edge that compounds over a roster. Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. A whole weekend of picks and tight end is somehow still a want.
If Caleb Williams and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 7 they get their guy under center for the next decade. A real need, handled.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Jordan Morgan at slot 36. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Keon Coleman slipping to Round 2, Pick 6 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Chop Robinson in the 40th pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jackson Powers-Johnson is a better player than the 67th overall pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They did well to land Zak Zinter in pick No. 100, just ahead of his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Good price on Tyler Davis in pick 102, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Taking Kris Abrams-Draine in the Round 5 slot is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A straight-up fair deal on Curtis Jacobs at pick No. 181, value and slot in agreement. A minor itch, scratched.
You do not let a running back like Michael Wiley reach the 226th overall pick and blink. They did not. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
