Somebody in the Round 5 slot was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Chargers sat still while Max Melton, the No. 111 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up. Edge rusher is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 5 they get a long-term starter on the line. A clean fit for the roster.
Brian Thomas Jr. slipping to the 37th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Chris Braswell is a better player than pick No. 69 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Tyler Davis slid further than he should have, and Round 4, Pick 5 is lovely value for the interior defensive lineman. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Circle this one: Max Melton at No. 142 is a fall that decides a draft. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
The board fumbled Braelon Allen all the way to the 183rd pick, and they scooped it up. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A offensive lineman of that caliber at the Round 7 slot is the definition of value, full stop. It fills a real need, too.
