Every so often the board makes a mistake, and the Packers were there to profit. Luke McCaffrey, the No. 149 name on the board, should have been long gone before slot 202.
The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. On the needs board they went 5 of 8, with cornerback the one that mattered most.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th overall pick they get a lockdown presence outside at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Cooper DeJean in pick 41 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
You do not let an offensive lineman like Amarius Mims reach slot 58 and blink. They did not. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Dominick Puni at pick No. 88 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
They let Max Melton come to them and pounced at Round 3, Pick 28. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A quiet steal in the 126th pick: Ray Davis for less than the market said. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Mason McCormick in the Round 5 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Luke McCaffrey at No. 202 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Nathaniel Watson in the 219th pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Jalen Sundell in No. 245 is fair value, right on his grade. A need, and now a little less of one.
They took Sam Hartman at par in Round 7, Pick 35, which is nothing to complain about. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
