The one they had to fix is still broken. The Vikings left safety untouched, and that omission hangs over an otherwise reasonable haul. More right than wrong, and a B to match.
Reaching for Nugent left real value on the table behind him. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
The trade work was a quiet net positive.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 16 they get a double-digit-sack hope. Exactly the need they had to hit.
By-the-book stuff, J.J. McCarthy at pick No. 42 squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Cooper Beebe in the Round 3 slot is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A market-rate interior defensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Braden Fiske. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Khyree Jackson in No. 108. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A wild overpay on Drake Nugent in slot 130, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Braelon Allen in the 148th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They took Justin Rogers at par in pick 160, which is nothing to complain about. A need, and now a little less of one.
They paid sticker price for Layden Robinson in pick 166, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
No drama and no debate, Javon Baker went about where he belonged in Round 6, Pick 4. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Zakhari Franklin at slot 230 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
