Somebody in slot 202 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Packers sat still while Malik Mustapha, the No. 170 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
They will need Davis to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up. They trusted the board more than the depth chart.
Good work on the whole, with wide receiver the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Olumuyiwa Fashanu at the 25th overall pick. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Kool-Aid McKinstry slipping to the Round 2 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A reach for Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in pick No. 58; a little patience would have been rewarded. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They paid sticker price for Dominick Puni in slot 88, and that is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Nice patience on Calen Bullock, who had no business lasting to No. 91. A minor itch, scratched.
Isaiah Davis at Round 4, Pick 26 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Khristian Boyd in the 169th pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They barely believed it either: Malik Mustapha still on the board at pick 202. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
A reach on Trevin Wallace in No. 219; the board had better options right there. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
They talked themselves into Austin Reed at the 245th pick, and the board did not agree. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A quiet steal in slot 255: Jalen Sundell for less than the market said. A need, and now a little less of one.
