Of all the ways to open, the Vikings chose the head-scratcher, spending Round 4, Pick 32 on Johnny Dixon with tight end still wide open. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
They punted on tight end, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. On value alone, Washington makes the weekend a net positive. They will need Milton III to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made.
In sum, a sensible class that nudges the roster the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.18
· Pick 18
· Nate Wiggins
· CB
· rank 15
In pick 18 they get a sticky cover corner. Need was not the driver here.
R2.10
· Pick 42
· Chris Braswell
· LB-EDGE
· rank 34
They read the board right and Chris Braswell was the payoff at the Round 2 slot. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R2.23
· Pick 55
· T'Vondre Sweat
· DL
· rank 60
T'Vondre Sweat at pick No. 55 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R3.16
· Pick 80
· Cooper Beebe
· OG
· rank 78
Cooper Beebe in Round 3, Pick 16 is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R4.30
· Pick 130
· Malik Washington
· WR
· rank 117
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Malik Washington in pick 130. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R4.32
· Pick 132
· Johnny Dixon
· CB
· rank 124
They bypassed pressing needs at tight end to take Johnny Dixon, a cornerback that was not the priority.
R5.12
· Pick 148
· Joe Milton III
· QB
· rank 162
Joe Milton III at the 148th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R5.24
· Pick 160
· Jaylen Wright
· RB
· rank 154
A clean, defensible pick in slot 160 with a little surplus value in Jaylen Wright. It fills a real need, too.
R5.28
· Pick 164
· Jordan Jefferson
· DT
· rank 177
They paid a round early for Jordan Jefferson in the 164th overall pick, more than the board wanted. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R5.29
· Pick 165
· Austin Booker
· DL-EDGE
· rank 156
Austin Booker at the Round 5 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R6.4
· Pick 179
· Josh Proctor
· S
· rank 183
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Josh Proctor. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R7.10
· Pick 230
· Steele Chambers
· LB
· rank 222
Steele Chambers is a better player than the 230th pick suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
