There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Chiefs started one anyway for Solomon Byrd, 68 picks ahead of schedule.
They banked enough surplus on Legette to cover a lot of smaller sins. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 32 they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
Patrick Paul at the Round 2 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Xavier Legette at pick No. 95 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Nehemiah Pritchett in pick 151 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A minor itch, scratched.
No edge and no loss on Jaylin Simpson in Round 5, Pick 23; it is a wash and a sensible one. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
AJ Barner at No. 173 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They talked themselves into Jaylen Harrell at pick 199, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A wild overpay on Solomon Byrd in pick No. 221, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The roster fit checks out.
They barely believed it either: Jase McClellan still on the board at slot 239. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
