Good, not great, for the Chiefs: B-.

There was a run on nobody at that position, and the Chiefs started one anyway for Solomon Byrd, 68 picks ahead of schedule.

They banked enough surplus on Legette to cover a lot of smaller sins. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.

They went 5 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.32 · Pick 32 · Troy Franklin · WR · rank 35
In slot 32 they get a difference-maker at receiver at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.32 · Pick 64 · Patrick Paul · OT · rank 85
Patrick Paul at the Round 2 slot is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R3.32 · Pick 95 · Xavier Legette · WR · rank 52
Xavier Legette at pick No. 95 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R5.15 · Pick 151 · Nehemiah Pritchett · CB · rank 136
Nehemiah Pritchett in pick 151 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A minor itch, scratched.
R5.23 · Pick 159 · Jaylin Simpson · CB · rank 158
No edge and no loss on Jaylin Simpson in Round 5, Pick 23; it is a wash and a sensible one. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
R5.37 · Pick 173 · AJ Barner · TE · rank 166
AJ Barner at No. 173 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R6.24 · Pick 199 · Jaylen Harrell · DE-EDGE · rank 220
They talked themselves into Jaylen Harrell at pick 199, and the board did not agree. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R7.1 · Pick 221 · Solomon Byrd · DE-EDGE · rank 289
A wild overpay on Solomon Byrd in pick No. 221, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. The roster fit checks out.
R7.19 · Pick 239 · Jase McClellan · RB · rank 217
They barely believed it either: Jase McClellan still on the board at slot 239. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
