The search is over. The Vikings handed the keys to J.J. McCarthy, and the whole operation now runs on his development.
They won the margins on every swap, and it adds up fast. However the rest shakes out, Brooks at that price is a win they earned.
They will need Bortolini to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. For all the activity, interior defensive lineman went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Add it up and this is about as clean as a draft weekend gets.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th overall pick they get a long-term answer under center at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Fair-plus on Roman Wilson, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. The roster fit checks out.
Jonathon Brooks in slot 70 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Zak Zinter in pick No. 108 is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Mohamed Kamara at the 115th pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Johnny Wilson in the Round 4 slot. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A reach for Tanor Bortolini in Round 5, Pick 1; a little patience would have been rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A conviction pick on AJ Barner at pick 150 that the board grades a round light. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Nothing to complain about; Luke McCaffrey went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Isaiah Davis at the 167th overall pick is the proof. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They took Sione Vaki at par in slot 177, which is nothing to complain about. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A quiet steal in pick No. 230: Tyrice Knight for less than the market said. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They paid a round early for Ethan Driskell in Round 7, Pick 12, more than the board wanted. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
