After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Commanders committed. Drake Maye is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. The bottom line is a respectable B-.
The cost of the Robinson reach is exactly the players who went right after him. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Dial.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. They punted on wide receiver, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the wide receiver spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 2 they get their guy under center for the next decade. A real need, handled.
Patrick Paul in the 40th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Darius Robinson in No. 67, miles early. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Jaheim Bell this early at slot 101. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Cedric Gray at pick 103 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A minor itch, scratched.
A reach on Drake Nugent in the 138th pick; the board had better options right there. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Braelon Allen at the Round 6 slot is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. It fills a real need, too.
Hunter Nourzad at pick No. 220 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Somehow Marcellas Dial was still sitting there in the 241st overall pick, and they pounced on premier cornerback value. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
