The rest of the league will want that one back. M.J. Devonshire tumbling to the Chargers in slot 220 is a gift they did not have to think twice about. It nets out a thoroughly average C-.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. That interior defensive lineman hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
The cost of the Barner reach is exactly the players who went right after him. On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
If Joe Alt and a couple of the gambles land, hindsight will be kinder than this grade.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 6 they get protection for the quarterback. A real need, handled.
A clean, defensible pick in the 37th pick with a little surplus value in Troy Franklin. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
By-the-book stuff, Kris Jenkins at the 49th overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They went early on Sedrick Van Pran in pick No. 69, and the value did not follow. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Blake Corum at No. 86 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A quiet steal in Round 3, Pick 27: Brandon Dorlus for less than the market said. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Caelen Carson slipping to slot 105 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Zak Zinter at the Round 4 slot is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Jarvis Brownlee Jr.. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Tommy Eichenberg at the 139th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A straight-up fair deal on Justin Eboigbe at Round 5, Pick 14, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A reach for AJ Barner in the Round 5 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Somehow Luke McCaffrey was still sitting there in slot 183, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They robbed the room for M.J. Devonshire here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Nothing to complain about; Michael Barrett went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
LaDarius Henderson at the 251st overall pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
The board had Evan Williams higher than the 256th pick, and the safety fell to them anyway. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
