You can hear the double-takes from here. The Vikings took Frank Gore Jr. at pick 190, roughly 33 spots before his name belonged. It grades a D, and the process earned it.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. J.J. McCarthy gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. That is an offensive lineman worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
A rough weekend that leaves the roster with more questions than answers.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 11 they get a problem off the edge at fair value. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
A conviction pick on J.J. McCarthy at the 16th pick that the board grades a round light. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Zach Frazier at the 39th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
The board fumbled Byron Murphy II all the way to the Round 2 slot, and they scooped it up. It fills a real need, too.
They let Blake Fisher come to them and pounced at slot 81. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Nice patience on Jaden Hicks, who had no business lasting to Round 3, Pick 20. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Blake Corum slipping to Round 3, Pick 37 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Brenden Rice at pick 108. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Christian Mahogany slid further than he should have, and slot 109 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They robbed the room for Gabriel Murphy here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Value with a capital V on Spencer Rattler in the 130th overall pick, a genuine coup. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Ben Sinnott in the 153rd pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Josh Newton in No. 154 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A minor itch, scratched.
Tommy Eichenberg is a better player than pick No. 156 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
They barely believed it either: Tykee Smith still on the board at No. 166. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A tidy little value on Ty'Ron Hopper in slot 179, a step better than break-even. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
A real head-scratcher, Frank Gore Jr. in pick No. 190 is miles ahead of his ranking. A need, and now a little less of one.
Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint in the Round 6 slot is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The roster fit checks out.
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Caedan Wallace in the 229th pick, plain and simple. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
