Call it larceny. Kyren Lacy sat on the board until No. 255, and the Commanders did not need to be asked twice.
That tight end hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. Felter has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
Jonah Savaiinaea at No. 57 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Maxwell Hairston at pick No. 77 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Ashton Gillotte at the 91st pick is money in the bank, a edge rusher taken below his worth. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Good price on Mansoor Delane in slot 127, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Benjamin Morrison at the 130th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Jack Bech at pick 142 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Joshua Gray. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
By-the-book stuff, Cashius Howell at the Round 6 slot squarely in line with his ranking. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Davin Vann in the 185th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It fills a real need, too.
They robbed the room for Antwane Wells Jr. here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Dont'e Thornton Jr. in the 219th overall pick should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
No edge and no loss on Micah Morris in slot 231; it is a wash and a sensible one. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Bryan Felter at Round 7, Pick 20 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Julian Fleming at pick No. 243 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Kyren Lacy at No. 255 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
