Somewhere a general manager is explaining how Jeremiah Trotter Jr. got past him. The Chargers do not have to explain a thing at the 105th overall pick.
Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Jacobs has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. They left with interior defensive lineman solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 5 they get a weapon on the perimeter. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They barely believed it either: Olumuyiwa Fashanu still on the board at slot 37. It fills a real need, too.
They let Braden Fiske come to them and pounced at the 69th overall pick. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Circle this one: Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at pick No. 105 is a fall that decides a draft. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Good price on Audric Estime in the Round 4 slot, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The roster fit checks out.
They robbed the room for Andru Phillips here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Curtis Jacobs at the 181st pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
They will replay Tahj Washington at Round 7, Pick 5 for years; that is how good the value is. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
C.J. Hanson at the Round 7 slot is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
