The Vikings spent the pick that matters most on Drake Maye, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. They moved the roster forward and banked a B for it.
That Newton pick is the receipt they will wave around later. Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 5th overall pick they get a franchise quarterback. The biggest hole, addressed.
In slot 23 they get a potential shutdown corner at fair value. More want than need.
A straight-up fair deal on Mekhi Wingo at the Round 4 slot, value and slot in agreement. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A tidy little value on Johnny Wilson in the 129th pick, a step better than break-even. A need, and now a little less of one.
Josh Newton in pick No. 157 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Dylan Laube at Round 5, Pick 31 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Tykee Smith in No. 177. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Value with a capital V on JD Bertrand in pick 230, a genuine coup. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Garret Greenfield slid further than he should have, and pick 232 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
