Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Chargers spent No. 105 on Taulia Tagovailoa, a name the board had a full 122 spots lower. A D- that will need time and luck to look better.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. It is not that Stover is a bad player; it is that the Chargers had louder needs to answer first.
That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The Stover value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, edge rusher very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 5 they get a home-run threat at receiver at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Edgerrin Cooper in No. 37 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Blake Corum in pick No. 69 is fair value, right on his grade. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Mike Sainristil. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid a round early for Bucky Irving in the Round 3 slot, more than the board wanted. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Taulia Tagovailoa at the 105th overall pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A need, and now a little less of one.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went TE-EDGE with Cade Stover while clear needs at edge rusher, interior defensive lineman and other spots sat open.
