The board owed the Cowboys one, and it paid up: Tez Johnson, the No. 89 name on the board, sitting there at the Round 5 slot like a gift left on the doorstep.
Conner has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 17 they get a bell-cow for the offense, and a steal at that. A real need, handled.
They will replay Jalon Walker at the Round 2 slot for years; that is how good the value is. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They read the board right and Deone Walker was the payoff at the 76th pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They paid a round early for Kyren Lacy in the 118th overall pick, more than the board wanted. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Tez Johnson in pick 150, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Jeffrey Bassa at slot 154 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Emery Jones Jr. at Round 5, Pick 31 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Tommi Hill in pick No. 172 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
You do not let a linebacker like Cody Simon reach the 174th pick and blink. They did not. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Value said wait; Hayden Conner in the Round 6 slot says they were not listening. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Ollie Gordon II in Round 6, Pick 33 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. The roster fit checks out.
John Williams in the 249th overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
