The rest of the league had time to spare on Matt Gulbin; the 49ers did not wait, grabbing him 42 spots ahead at the 139th overall pick. No fireworks, but a solid B.
That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
It is a bet on later, and a defensible one for a team playing the long game. Offensive lineman was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Malachi Lawrence well ahead of where he belonged. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They let A.J. Haulcy come to them and pounced at the Round 2 slot. A minor itch, scratched.
They barely believed it either: Ja'Kobi Lane still on the board at pick No. 120. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Value said wait; Beau Stephens in the 127th pick says they were not listening. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Good price on Justin Joly in slot 129, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Zxavian Harris. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They went early on Kaytron Allen in No. 138, and the value did not follow. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A real head-scratcher, Matt Gulbin in pick 139 is miles ahead of his ranking. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
The board had Jeff Caldwell higher than the 201st overall pick, and the wide receiver fell to them anyway. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
TJ Hall in slot 239 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Trey Zuhn III in Round 7, Pick 27 is fair value, right on his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
