Everything else got attention, and edge rusher got none. That is a strange way for the Patriots to leave a draft. They moved the roster forward and banked a B- for it.
On value alone, Baker makes the weekend a net positive. Melton has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The dealing tilted against them, just enough to notice.
On the needs board they went 4 of 8, with wide receiver the one that mattered most.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
JC Latham at No. 11 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
No drama and no debate, Brian Thomas Jr. went about where he belonged in pick 23. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
J.J. McCarthy at the Round 2 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the quarterback. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A premium they did not need to pay, Max Melton a notch or two before his time. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Javon Baker at Round 4, Pick 3 is the proof. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Ben Sinnott in pick No. 137 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. The roster fit checks out.
They went early on Cornelius Johnson in the 180th overall pick, and the value did not follow. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Joe Milton III at the 193rd pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
