After circling the position for what felt like forever, the Vikings committed. J.J. McCarthy is the quarterback now, and the roster gets built to his timeline. It washes out to a C+, no better and no worse.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Dixon. If Eichenberg pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.
Not a disaster, not a triumph, just a middling class.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 11 they get a difference-maker at receiver. A clean fit for the roster.
In Round 1, Pick 23 they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
Graham Barton is a better player than No. 40 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Jonathon Brooks at slot 46 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A straight-up fair deal on Michael Hall Jr. at the Round 3 slot, value and slot in agreement. It fills a real need, too.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Tommy Eichenberg this early at the 99th overall pick. A minor need, but a need all the same.
The board fumbled Johnny Wilson all the way to the 157th pick, and they scooped it up. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Walter Rouse in pick No. 199 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Johnny Dixon in pick No. 239 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
