The board owed the Commanders one, and it paid up: Dwight McGlothern, the No. 161 name on the board, sitting there at the 222nd pick like a gift left on the doorstep.
Drake Maye gives the offense a face and a plan, and the grade leans heavily on whether he hits. Zinter has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped running back, which is a strange place to end up.
In the end, a coin-flip class: fine today, with a wide range of outcomes ahead.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 2 they get the face of the franchise. A real need, handled.
Jordan Morgan at pick No. 36 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
By-the-book stuff, Chris Braswell at the Round 2 slot squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Cade Stover in the 67th pick is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Zak Zinter at slot 78 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They liked Cedric Gray enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 100. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A reach for Johnny Wilson in pick 115; a little patience would have been rewarded. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Mason McCormick at the 139th overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Xavier Thomas at Round 5, Pick 16 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They barely believed it either: Dwight McGlothern still on the board at No. 222. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
