Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings drew a line under the quarterback search with McCarthy: A-.

The one hole that towered over the rest is filled. The Vikings spent their marquee pick on J.J. McCarthy, and for the first time in a while there is a real answer at quarterback.

Rosengarten falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class.

They are betting McCarthy proves the room right and everyone else wrong.

In the end it comes back to J.J. McCarthy, and a haul good enough to build on right away.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.14 · Pick 14 · J.J. McCarthy · QB · rank 29
In pick 14 they get their quarterback of the future, though they paid up to get him. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.6 · Pick 38 · Ennis Rakestraw Jr. · CB · rank 35
They did well to land Ennis Rakestraw Jr. in Round 2, Pick 6, just ahead of his grade. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
R4.6 · Pick 106 · Christian Mahogany · OG · rank 98
Value with a capital V on Christian Mahogany in No. 106, a genuine coup. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R4.8 · Pick 108 · Mekhi Wingo · DT · rank 108
No edge and no loss on Mekhi Wingo in the Round 4 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R5.6 · Pick 142 · Isaac Guerendo · RB · rank 128
Nice patience on Isaac Guerendo, who had no business lasting to slot 142. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R5.10 · Pick 146 · Luke McCaffrey · WR · rank 149
They paid sticker price for Luke McCaffrey in the 146th overall pick, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
R5.21 · Pick 157 · Marcus Harris · DE-EDGE · rank 152
Marcus Harris at the 157th pick nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R5.31 · Pick 167 · Roger Rosengarten · OT · rank 135
Somehow Roger Rosengarten was still sitting there in pick No. 167, and they pounced on premier offensive lineman value. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R5.32 · Pick 168 · Hunter Nourzad · C · rank 159
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Hunter Nourzad at the 168th pick. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R6.2 · Pick 177 · Sione Vaki · S · rank 158
They will replay Sione Vaki at the Round 6 slot for years; that is how good the value is. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R7.10 · Pick 230 · Jordan Magee · LB · rank 222
They let Jordan Magee come to them and pounced at Round 7, Pick 10. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R7.12 · Pick 232 · Trey Knox · TE · rank 223
Trey Knox is a better player than pick 232 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
