The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on J.J. McCarthy, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape. No fireworks, but a solid B-.
Hartman has a lot of ground to make up just to look fairly priced. The Davis value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. They will regret leaving edge rusher for another day if the season turns on it.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 3 they get a franchise quarterback, though the board says they badly overpaid. A real need, handled.
By-the-book stuff, Ladd McConkey at the Round 2 slot squarely in line with his ranking. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Patrick Paul in the 68th pick is fair value, right on his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Khyree Jackson at Round 4, Pick 3 is the proof. It adds depth where they could use a little.
No drama and no debate, Roger Rosengarten went about where he belonged in the 137th overall pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
You do not let a running back like Isaiah Davis reach slot 180 and blink. They did not. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Cornelius Johnson in pick No. 193. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A big swing on Sam Hartman at pick 231, well ahead of any board in the building. A need, and now a little less of one.
